Who aM I
I seem to have a reputation of being some kind of rebel in the perfume world.
I like the idea, and indeed I have a disruptive personality (said my therapist) and subversive ideas. What I love in perfumery is clashing or blending past and present, mixing familiar and strange smells. Also, my story of becoming a perfumer is not an obvious one.
I have never studied in a perfumery school, I am rather self-taught, something that gives me a very particular method and approach to perfumery. It's not better nor worse than the conventional path.
It's just very different. And in this uniqueness lies my originality.
When 12 years ago I entered the perfume industry by becoming an editor at Fragrantica, I was collecting vintage fragrances and looking for something that perfumery had lost: emotion and sensuality.
After learning so much and meeting so many amazing brands and perfumers, the quest hadn't been answered, so I decided to do it myself. After many experiments (and failures) and some perfume workshops in Paris and Grasse, I decided to show what I had concocted to some friends. One of them, perfumer Chris Maurice, gave me a life changing push. He saw the talent and passion in me, and invited me to work with him as an perfumer for C de La Niche. Since then, I launched my own brand in 2019 and until now I have worked for many niche perfume brands around the world. I even won the Art and Olfaction Award twice, besides being a finalist many times already.

More than perfumes,
I create intimate fragrances
that tell stories.
Miguel Matos Perfumes is perhaps what they now call an “Ultra-Niche” brand. Small distribution, small batches, produced by the perfumer, and with a very personal authoral signature. I believe this is where the future of artistic perfumery lies. If I would describe my body of work, I would have to say that I work from historical or traditional structures, and then I break or twist them in order to create deconstructed olfactory pieces. I have a passion for vintage French perfumery and Chypre is the style of perfumery that is closer to my heart, but you can find very different things in my portfolio. If in the beginning I was looking to shock people with a very strange perfumery-making, nowadays, I am looking for more subtleties and mysteries inside composition. One thing has remained: the quest for emotion, beauty and innovation.
I feel like I am constantly curating my own brand. This means that every year I launch new fragrances, scents that tell my personal and sometimes very intimate story (even if I don't tell you everything). My perfumes are often very autobiographic. At the same time, I tend to discontinue older fragrances, because I have moved on, and I feel that some of them don't represent me anymore in the present. This way, I try to have a limited line, but one that I fully identify with.
